Superman #1 Sells for $9.12 Million, Becomes Most Expensive Comic Book Ever Sold
A pristine copy of Superman No. 1 (1939) has rocketed into the record books, selling for $9.12 million at Heritage Auctions’ Comic Books Signature® Auction. The sale makes it the most expensive comic book ever sold, toppling the previous record of Action Comics No. 1 ($6 million in 2024).
This particular copy, found in a Northern California attic and graded CGC 9.0, is now considered the best-known example of Superman’s solo title debut. Protected only by a pile of old newspapers, it’s one of just seven copies graded 6.0 or higher.
“This is a milestone in pop culture history,” said Lon Allen, VP at Heritage Auctions. “And it’s a story worthy of a movie.”
Collectors and investors took note. Heritage’s Jim Halperin said the record-breaking price reflects a “trajectory into the upper reaches of the auction field,” as comics continue to gain ground as high-value collectibles.
The auction continues through Nov. 22, with more historic lots still in play. Find more information about available lots and sale results of the Nov. 20–22 Heritage Auctions Comic Books Signature® Auction here.
